- Reading
- Keep a simple two-column list of the Clanker and Darwinist inventions as they appear. This can help distinguish the rival technologies without treating either side’s claims as settled fact.
- Themes
- Rival technologies in wartime: Clanker powers use steam-driven armed machines, while British Darwinists employ genetically fabricated animals. The conflict is framed through contrasting mechanical and biological approaches to warfare.
- Deryn’s disguise: Deryn disguises herself as a boy to join the British Air Service and learns to fly genetically engineered creatures. Deryn’s disguise is part of the setup for joining the British Air Service.
- Worth knowing
