- Reading
- Consider reading together if the animal harm or violence could be upsetting; pause to check how the scenes are landing, without needing to resolve the mystery in advance.
- Themes
- Accusation and justice: Dovey is accused after Parnell is found dead and faces a trial while seeking to establish what happened. The book takes a critical view of this.
- Disability and treatment: Parnell treats Amos as stupid because he cannot hear, while Dovey objects to his behaviour towards her brother. The book takes a critical view of this.
- Worth knowing
- The plot includes Parnell’s killing, a violent attack on Dovey and the brutal killing of a dog. These scenes may be intense for readers sensitive to harm or animal cruelty.
