- Reading
- Try reading the play aloud, pausing to discuss how stage directions, language and role choices shape a scene. Use the included activities selectively to match your reader’s interests.
- Themes
- Taking a female stage role: Will tries to persuade Hamnet to play a female role; Hamnet is reluctant. The disagreement is part of the setup; how the play treats Hamnet’s reluctance is unclear.
- Worth knowing
- Hamnet is reluctant to perform a female role, and Will receives a frosty reception from his wife, Anne Hathaway. Consider whether these family tensions and the role disagreement are comfortable topics for your reader.
