- Themes
- Power and control: Adelice is called upon to use her power in a battle for control of Earth. The struggle is part of the story’s central situation, but its moral framing is not clear.
- Secrets and personal history: Adelice uncovers truths about her own history and learns that others hold secrets. The discoveries introduce questions about what Adelice knows and whom she can trust; their treatment is unclear.
- Romantic uncertainty: The plot raises the possibility that Adelice’s connection with Jost may be affected by a pull towards his brother Erik. Romantic uncertainty is present, but the summary does not establish what Adelice chooses or how the relationships are portrayed.
