- Reading
- Read it together if possible, pausing after a comic incident to discuss how it affects Jake and his father. Afterwards, explore one space idea—such as light years or the Fermi paradox—separately.
- Themes
- Parental love beneath embarrassment: Jake finds his father embarrassing, while his father tries hard to spend time with and connect with him. The relationship is presented as emotionally warm beneath the comedy, with parental love described as unconditional.
- Belonging and responsibility: Jake must help persuade aliens to give humans a chance to become responsible citizens of the universe. The story uses a science-fiction conflict to examine what it means to be human and whether humanity deserves wider trust.
- Science through imaginative fiction: The story incorporates ideas including gravity as curved space-time, light years, the Fermi paradox and the Cosmic Zoo hypothesis. Science concepts are woven into an imaginative adventure and invite questions about life beyond Earth.
- Worth knowing
- Some scenes involve killer robots, cosmic authorities taking Jake’s father away, and a spaceship accident that injures teachers. School humiliation and classmates mocking Jake’s father are also part of the situation.
