Nancy Smiler Levinson
- Reading
- Read together in short sections, pausing at the navigation and political-struggle material. Let the child set the pace around the expedition’s hardships and Magellan’s death.
- Themes
- Exploration and trade: The expedition seeks a route to Asia and the Spice Islands, using navigational tools amid political battles over Pacific islands. The book presents this mainly as information or explanation.
- Worth knowing
- The voyage involves hunger, violent weather and attacks; Magellan is killed by a poison arrow. These events may warrant a check-in if difficult historical material is a concern.
