- Reading
- Dip into a chapter that catches your reader’s interest, then try its activity if the materials and time suit. The glossary and diagrams can help when unfamiliar terms or concepts arise.
- Themes
- How astronomical knowledge changes: The book follows ideas about the universe from early observations through discoveries such as quasars, pulsars, black holes and distant planets. The book presents this mainly as information or explanation.
- Women in astronomy: The book includes women astronomers such as Caroline Herschel, Annie Jump Cannon, Jocelyn Bell-Burnell and Margaret Geller. Their inclusion offers a broader view of who has contributed to astronomy than a focus on only the best-known figures.
- Worth knowing
- Some activities involve more effort or construction, and the subject includes challenging ideas such as relativity, parallax and dark energy. You could try a concept together or choose a simpler observation activity first.
