- Reading
- Read in short stretches if that suits your family, pausing after the investigation’s tense moments to talk about how the characters are responding. The ending and the details of the danger are unclear.
- Themes
- Grief and trust: Justin and Max have each lost someone important and gradually learn to trust one another. The outline presents their developing bond, but does not establish a broader judgement about grief or how it should be handled.
- Military service and danger: Max is a military canine who protected soldiers; after Kyle’s death, he leaves service and lives with Kyle’s family. Justin and Max later encounter danger during their investigation. These circumstances are part of the story, but the outline does not establish how military service or its risks are evaluated.
- Worth knowing
- Kyle’s death in Afghanistan and Max’s trauma are part of the story; the investigation also brings danger. If these subjects feel close to home, you may want to check in as you read together.
