Nick the sidekick
Dave Whamond
- Reading
- Pause over the panels where Nick challenges the sidekick label and notice how narration, visual scale and comic interruptions shape the story. Afterwards, compare public recognition with quieter forms of contribution.
- Themes
- Recognition and credit: Nick does much of the crime-solving but is called a sidekick and is not properly credited by his partner. The treatment clearly challenges the idea that a person’s supporting role makes their work less valuable.
- Appearance and ridicule: Nick’s large ears enable his exceptional hearing but also attract ridicule from classmates. The story appears to turn a mocked feature into a practical strength while presenting the ridicule as a difficulty Nick faces.
- Teamwork and friendship: Tess supports Nick, while Super Fantastic Guy depends on Nick’s ability but fails to show him respect or remember his name. Supportive friendship is contrasted with a self-centred partnership, suggesting that teamwork depends on valuing each person’s contribution.
- Worth knowing
- Some children may want to discuss the repeated ridicule of Nick’s ears, his partner’s dismissive behaviour and the superhero conflict, including crime-solving, villains and a character receiving comeuppance.
