- Reading
- If reading together, pause after the bargain is introduced and ask what each character might want; revisit the question at the end, if the ending sheds light on it.
- Themes
- A bargain with the Dark Man: The shoemaker Séadna makes a deal with “the Dark Man”; the story is rooted in folklore and related to the Faust legend. The bargain places a consequential choice at the centre of the tale, but its moral framing cannot be determined.
- Worth knowing
- Pay particular attention to fear and suspense.
