SuitabookThe Spectacular Now
Tim Tharp
- Reading
- Consider checking in as you read about Sutter's drinking and his choices around Aimee; the ending and the wider effects of his behaviour are not established here.
- Themes
- Alcohol and self-destructive behaviour: Sutter's party-going life includes drinking, and substance abuse and self-destructive behaviour appear among the book's subjects. These topics may prompt reflection on how drinking fits into Sutter's life, without assuming that the story approves or condemns it.
- Helping and responsibility: Sutter thinks Aimee needs help and realises that his involvement could affect her life for better or worse. The premise raises a question about care and responsibility, but does not establish whether Sutter's approach is wise or welcome.
- Worth knowing
- Alcohol is part of Sutter's routine, and the book is tagged with substance abuse and self-destructive behaviour. The extent and consequences of either are not clear here.
