- Reading
- Before reading, explain that the story involves family strain, a friendship under strain and a faith-related challenge. Pause when Tara’s plan develops, and revisit her motives and choices afterwards.
- Themes
- Trying to repair a family: Tara continues a plan intended to reunite her parents, despite difficulties and reduced support from Suzanne. The story places Tara’s efforts at the centre, but does not show whether her intervention is treated as wise, harmful or successful.
- Faith under pressure: Tara is discovering that her new faith may cost her something while other relationships are already strained. Faith is clearly important to Tara’s situation, but the book’s stance towards it and the nature of the sacrifice are not established.
- Friendship under strain: Suzanne is no longer speaking to Tara and will not assist with the plan they had created together. The friendship breakdown creates a significant obstacle, but it is unclear whether either character is shown as chiefly responsible.
- Worth knowing
- Consider reading alongside the child if family separation, friendship breakdown or religious change may feel personally significant. The plan’s contents and intensity are not clear enough to anticipate every difficult moment.
