- Reading
- Try reading together if your child prefers company during suspenseful scenes. Pause to compare clues from the two investigations, and check in if the prisoner’s situation feels troubling.
- Themes
- Investigation and initiative: Nancy pursues two mysteries and is determined to find and free a prisoner. Her persistence and investigative role are clear, but the summary alone does not establish the story’s broader judgement of her choices.
- Worth knowing
- The plot includes an elderly woman held prisoner, an injured pigeon and an eerie fire-like signal after dark. These elements bring peril and suspense; how vividly they are depicted is unclear.
