Original Book on African Storybook: Aku the Sun Maker (opens in a new tab)- Reading
- Pause when the sky darkens and again when the ball flies upwards. Invite your child to describe what the pictures show and how they think the town might be feeling.
- Themes
- Being excluded: Children reject Aku from their games because of her long legs, and later laugh at what she says about the sun. The story shows the hurt and loneliness that follow, but does not clearly explore why the children behave this way or how their attitudes change.
- Curiosity and imagination: Aku wonders about the sun and other things, comes to regard the sun as her friend, and believes it has not died or travelled. The story follows Aku’s conviction through a magical resolution in which her football kick sends the sun back into the sky.
- Worth knowing
- Aku is left out of games, laughed at by children and made lonely. The sun’s disappearance also leaves the town subdued and unable to carry on ordinary activities.
