- Reading
- Pause at Lynn’s changing view of family and lifestyle. Invite the reader to compare what each family values, without assuming either way of life is presented as the right answer.
- Themes
- Friendship and family: Lynn meets Blossom and her family, then reconsiders what family and friendship mean. The story uses Lynn’s encounter with a different family to explore these ideas, leaving the meaning of family and friendship open.
- Lifestyle and use of resources: The Underlanders forage and trade, using items discarded by Citizens; Lynn’s encounter prompts her to consider her own lifestyle. The contrast brings different ways of living into focus without a clearly stated overall judgement.
- Worth knowing
- Lynn’s life is saved by Blossom, and the Underlanders live secretly in a bunker beneath a reservoir. These elements bring peril and concealed, unconventional living into the story.
