- Reading
- Read together and pause to look at the snowy scenes. Afterwards, invite your child to describe what Akiak might notice or need as she travels, without assuming how frightening the journey feels.
- Themes
- Determination and independence: After being withdrawn from the race, Akiak follows the trail to catch up with her team. Her persistence drives the adventure, but the available plot details do not establish whether the story treats it as wholly admirable or considers its risks.
- Worth knowing
- Akiak hurts her paw and is taken out of the race. If your child is sensitive to animal injuries or separation, you could preview how these moments are depicted.
