There Are Cats in This Book
Viviane Schwarz
- Reading
- Read it aloud with room for the child to operate the pages and answer the cats. Pause before each invitation, then revisit the illustrations to talk about how the cats’ play changes the room and the reading experience.
- Themes
- Shared participation: The cats ask the reader to turn pages, lift or move parts of the book and help with their activities. Participation is treated as enjoyable and socially engaging: the cats greet, praise and invite the reader back to play.
- Playful mischief: The cats move through yarn, cardboard boxes, pillows and water while inviting the reader to follow their increasingly active game. The behaviour is presented as friendly, energetic fun, followed by drying off and settling down rather than a serious consequence.
- Worth knowing
- Some children may want to discuss the cats’ energetic behaviour: they tangle themselves in yarn, engage in a pillow fight and end up in water. These moments are presented as comic mischief rather than frightening danger.
