More about this book

Second in the series, Caesar is back on duty and in Afghanistan for his most daring mission yet When SAS hero Charlie masters his prosthetic legs and proves his superiors wrong when they say his fighting days are over, he returns to SAS service--and gives Caesar the super-sniffing Explosive Detection Dog back to Ben, his trainer. On their first mission after they're reunited, Caesar and Ben discover a bomb at the Sydney Opera House, targeted at the visiting Secretary General of the United Nations. A little later, the Secretary General's helicopter goes down while touring Afghanistan, and he is captured by the Taliban's Commander Baradar. Along with their friends Duke Hazard and Sergeant Tim McHenry from the U.S., Caesar, Ben, and Charlie form the team sent in to rescue the Secretary General from a cave beside Afghanistan's Dragon Lake. How will they succeed? An experimental mini submarine will help--and Caesar's famous nose is sure to sniff out trouble along the way.

Themes in Context

A chain of escalating missions

The action moves from Caesar and Ben discovering a bomb in Sydney to a team operation to rescue a captured official in Afghanistan.Exploratory / explanatory

How the book presents it: The described plot is organised around successive operational challenges, with Caesar's detection skills and a mini-submarine among the means of tackling them.

Talk about: How does each new task change what the team needs to do?

Why It May Be Worth Reading

The story combines military action with a dog-centred adventure and a character's return to demanding work after injury. Its changing mission gives readers several strands to follow, from detection work to the rescue operation.

What Deserves Attention

Bomb threats, explosives, a helicopter crash, capture and a planned armed rescue are part of the danger. Charlie's prosthetic legs and return to service also feature; consider how a reader responds to injury and military peril.

A Conversation Worth Having

If Charlie's return to service raises questions about injury, ability or others' expectations, what does his experience suggest about how people judge what someone can do?

Reading Approach

If this is a new series entry for the reader, briefly explain who Caesar, Ben and Charlie are before beginning. Pause at mission changes to help keep track of the team and its changing tasks.
