Mo is described as very fearful but puts on a brave face and tries to recover his brother despite frightening obstacles.
Mo seeks help from the Shiver Squad and acts to bring his younger brother home; the extracts also emphasise trust and kindness.
Blue Bessie is described as frightening, but later hints about her past and loneliness lead one reader to view her more sympathetically.
