Come back, Lucy

It offers a way to talk about how a child can feel out of place after a major change, and how companionship may seem appealing even when it becomes troubling.

Bereavement and loneliness shape Lucy’s situation; the ghost story also builds an unsettling, sometimes frightening atmosphere, with Alice becoming increasingly threatening.

If Lucy’s new circumstances make her feel she belongs nowhere, what kinds of welcome or support might help her feel more at home?

Consider reading together if ghost stories feel intense; pause when Alice’s behaviour changes and invite the reader to notice how their view of the friendship shifts.
