Catty Jane who loved to dance

Valeri Gorbachev - Author

A ballet-loving kitten learns that dancing with friends can be enjoyable too. Ballet practice, disagreement with Froggy, and a lively party shape a gentle story about different ways of moving.

More about this book

Catty Jane was born to dance. When she's old enough, she enrolls at Mrs. Herron's Dance Academy where she learns that ballet takes a lot of practice. On her way home from class, the kitten meets Froggy, who shows her his vaulting and somersaulting moves. It doesn't look anything like ballet and Catty Jane tells him so. The two pals sit in angry silence until friends come along and suggest a dance party. Catty Jane wants nothing to do with that kind of dancing either. But when she overhears the fun her friends are having, and her mom gives her an encouraging nudge, Catty Jane joins the crowd and has a good time. Perhaps it is not the kind of dancing that matters, but that you get up and move.

Themes in Context

Different ways to dance

Catty Jane first treats ballet as the only true dance, then joins friends whose dancing includes jumping and tumbling.

How the book presents it: The story's resolution supports the idea that people can enjoy dance in different ways, rather than presenting ballet as the sole valid form.

Talk about: Does Catty Jane's change come from seeing the fun her friends are having, her mother's encouragement, or both?

Why It May Be Worth Reading

The story offers a child-friendly opening to talk about being certain one way is best, and what can change when we notice other people enjoying themselves.

What Deserves Attention

Catty Jane dismisses Froggy's moves and the party, and the two sit in angry silence for a time. The disagreement is brief in the described plot.

A Conversation Worth Having

If Catty Jane sees ballet as the only true dance, what helps her reconsider? Does the story suggest that enjoying an activity together matters as much as doing it in one particular way?

Reading Approach

Pause when Catty Jane rejects the other dancing, then compare her view with what she notices at the party. This can keep the conversation focused on changing one's mind without treating ballet as wrong.

What remains unconfirmed

Different ways to dance: The plot outline does not show how the friends respond to Catty Jane's earlier dismissal beyond the brief angry silence.
