Blythe Woolston - Author
A bleak, satirical dystopia about a young person entering retail work as corporate power and consumer culture shape everyday life. Zoe’s search for somewhere to live brings the social costs of this imagined world into focus.
Sharp and satirical, this dark comedy will appeal to fans of M.T. Anderson's groundbreaking dystopia, Feed. An unsettling story of consumerism gone mad, MARTians imagines a not-so-distant future where our lives are ruled by the purchases we make. Last girl Zoe Zindleman, numerical ID 009-99-9999, is starting work at AllMART, where your smile is the AllMART welcome mat . Her living arrangements are equally bleak: she can wait for her home to be foreclosed and stripped of anything valuable now that AnnaMom has moved away, or move to the Warren, an abandoned shopping centre, to live with the other left-behinds. With a handful of other disaffected, forgotten children, Zoe must find her place in a world that has consumed itself beyond redemption. She may be a last girl, but her name means life, and Zoe isn't ready to disappear into the AllMART abyss. Zoe wants to live.

The story includes a young person left to manage after her mother moves away, bleak housing options and children living in an abandoned shopping centre. Its near-future society is portrayed as socially and economically harsh.
If Zoe’s view of the world changes as she learns more about the stores, what details seem to shape that change? Which parts of her situation feel most important to her?
Reading together or checking in after the opening could help if the abrupt changes to Zoe’s school, work and home life feel stark. Afterwards, compare what the story shows with what it leaves unresolved.
