More about this book

Five misfits - one holey, one folded up like an envelope, one floppy and boneless, one topsey-turvey, and one that can only be described as a total catastrophe - are perfectly content living in their ramshackle house until one day Mr Perfect, replete with bright pink knickerbockers and fluorescent hair, arrives to inform the happy-go-lucky crew that their lives are "completely worthless". Initially dejected and depressed, each character uses their own special talent to turn the criticism on its head. This quirky and allegorical picture book is filled with humorous and poignant moments, brought to life beautiful contemporary artwork from one of Europe's best-loved talents.

Themes in Context

Difference and imperfection

Five unconventional characters live contentedly together, while Mr Perfect presents their differences as evidence that their lives are worthless.

How the book presents it: The book clearly presents the characters’ distinct qualities as meaningful and valuable rather than as defects requiring correction.

Talk about: How does the book distinguish between a difference and a deficiency?

Judgement and worth

Mr Perfect arrives with a superior attitude and tells the group that their lives are completely worthless, leaving them initially dejected.

How the book presents it: His judgement is framed as condescending, and the group’s non-aggressive response challenges his definition of purpose and value.

Talk about: Does the story suggest that usefulness must be measured by another person’s standards?

Why It May Be Worth Reading

This could open a conversation about how labels affect self-worth and whether being unlike an ideal really means being deficient. The exaggerated characters may make an abstract idea easier to discuss without focusing on real people.

What Deserves Attention

The most important point to notice is the shift from the five characters’ dejection after being called worthless to their active use of their own qualities. The criticism may merit a pause before continuing.

A Conversation Worth Having

If someone describes a person or a life as worthless, what might that person believe about themselves, and what could help them question the judgement? Which qualities in the five characters are easy to overlook?

Reading Approach

Read the characters’ introductions slowly, inviting observations about how their appearances and habits differ. When Mr Perfect arrives, pause to name the effect of his words, then compare each later response with his definition of usefulness.
