Nancy and Ally move from exchanging letters to sharing activities during Ally's visit; the closing idea is that sisters remain together even when apart.
Ally is an alligator although Nancy and her parents appear human, and Ally is treated as almost like a sister.
Ally eats an unusually large amount of pizza, and the illustrations include comic details such as matching outfits. The visit also includes swimming, ballet, rollerskating and a beach outing.
