More about this book

1910. Pownal, Vermont. At 12, Grace and her best friend Arthur must leave school and go to work as a "doffers" on their mothers' looms in the mill. Grace's mother is the best worker, fast and powerful, and Grace desperately wants to help her. But she's left handed and doffing is a right-handed job. Grace's every mistake costs her mother, and the family. She only feels capable on Sundays, when she and Arthur receive special lessons from their teacher. Together they write a secret letter to the Child Labor Board about underage children working in Pownal. A few weeks later a man with a camera shows up. It is the famous reformer Lewis Hine, undercover, collecting evidence for the Child Labor Board. Grace's brief acquaintance with Hine and the photos he takes of her are a gift that changes her sense of herself, her future, and her family's future. From the Hardcover edition.

Talk about: If their letter brings outside attention, what changes, if any, follow for the children?

A photograph as historical witness

Lewis Hine arrives to photograph and document children working in the mill; the story was inspired by one of his photographs.Exploratory / explanatory

How the book presents it: The novel connects a fictionalised story with Hine’s documentary work and includes author’s notes about the photographer and the image that inspired it.

Talk about: How might a photograph affect how people understand children’s work?

Why It May Be Worth Reading

The novel puts children’s work, lost schooling and family finances at the centre, and follows Grace as she reassesses her abilities and future. It also draws on Lewis Hine’s child-labour photography.

What Deserves Attention

A boy deliberately puts his hand into machinery, losing two fingers; an old man is killed trying to board a moving train. These scenes may be disturbing, particularly for sensitive readers.

A Conversation Worth Having

If Grace and Arthur’s letter brings attention to the mill, what do you think a photograph can show that a written appeal might not?

Reading Approach

Consider reading together or checking in around the machinery and train incidents. The book also includes an author’s note about Hine and the photograph that inspired the story, which can extend discussion of its historical background.
