Themes in Context

Difference and change

Catherine is orderly, whereas Big Cat is wild, chaotic and lawless; their meeting leads to shared adventure and a discovery of common ground.

How the book presents it: The contrast is treated positively: the friendship is said to help the characters grow through different experiences and to celebrate change and being different.

Talk about: How does each character respond to the other’s way of approaching the world?

Curiosity and familiar places

Catherine investigates rumours and travels through Melbourne with Big Cat, while the artwork includes recognisable city artworks, facts and locations.

How the book presents it: Curiosity and looking at everyday surroundings in new ways are presented as rewarding parts of the adventure.

Talk about: What might become newly interesting when an ordinary place is examined carefully?

Why It May Be Worth Reading

This may suit a child who enjoys investigation, visual detail and imaginative possibilities close to home. It also offers opportunities to notice how two very different characters influence one another without treating difference as a problem to erase.

What Deserves Attention

The Big Cat is presented as mysterious, chaotic and lawless, while the story also includes rumours of sightings and an adventure through the city. The extracts do not establish frightening scenes, violence or harm.

A Conversation Worth Having

What does Catherine notice changing in herself or her view of familiar places, and does the meeting make her feel differently about order, wildness or people who are unlike her?

Reading Approach

Read it slowly enough to explore the illustrations and revisit the city details. Pause over unfamiliar vocabulary, then use the end-paper glossary, facts and locations to invent a nearby observation or treasure hunt.

Curiosity and familiar places: The full sequence of discoveries and the ending of the adventure remain unclear.
