Paul Stewart - Author

The story turns quiet into something Owl and Squirrel can gather: they notice stillness in nature and collect it to take back to Squirrel’s babies. The woodland journey pairs a magical idea with close attention to sounds and pauses.

Quiet in a noisy woodland

Bird quarrelling and other loud sounds keep the squirrel babies awake; Owl and Squirrel collect moments of quiet from the woodland.

How the book presents it: The story presents noticing and gathering stillness as a helpful response to the noise, while the Silence Catcher makes this a magical, imaginative solution.

Talk about: Which sounds feel noisy, and which moments of quiet stand out to you?

Why It May Be Worth Reading

Its central appeal is the contrast between a noisy woodland and small moments of calm. The short sentences, repeated words and sound-focused typography give the story a read-aloud quality and invite attention to how quiet can be noticed.

What Deserves Attention

The opening has squabbling birds and noise loud enough to keep baby squirrels awake; the story then turns towards peaceful stillness. This contrast may matter to a child who is sensitive to noisy scenes.

A Conversation Worth Having

Which quiet moment would you most like to notice in the woodland, and what makes it feel different from the birds’ noisy quarrelling?

Reading Approach

Pause over the repeated words and sound-shaped typography, then give the quieter moments room to land. Invite your child to listen for a small sound or a moment of silence together, without needing to recreate Owl’s magic.
