Jayde Perkin - Author
This is a direct, emotionally serious story about a child living through her mother’s death. It offers language for grief, shows that support can coexist with loneliness, and uses a familiar garment to represent continuing love and memory.
The young girl loses her mother and tries to understand the resulting grief, loneliness, anger and confusion.Exploratory / explanatoryExploratory / explanatory: the book explains or explores the subject without an established evaluative position.Exploratory / explanatory: the book explains or explores the subject without an established evaluative position.
How the book presents it: Grief is presented as complicated and lasting rather than as something that simply becomes smaller; the child and father learn to live with it together.
Talk about: Whether the story’s ending gives enough space to the child’s continuing grief remains worth discussing.
Memory through an object
The mother’s folded red jumper becomes connected with memories and with the child’s effort to keep her mother close.Exploratory / explanatoryExploratory / explanatory: the book explains or explores the subject without an established evaluative position.Exploratory / explanatory: the book explains or explores the subject without an established evaluative position.

Support does not remove loneliness

Why It May Be Worth Reading
Its value lies in naming difficult feelings without suggesting that grief simply disappears. The changing colour and imagery, together with conversations between the child and her father, may help a reader recognise that grief can change shape over time.

What Deserves Attention
The mother’s hospitalisation and death, followed by the child’s devastation, detachment, anger and difficulty concentrating, may feel especially close to a child experiencing bereavement. The story also includes kindness from adults, teachers and friends.

A Conversation Worth Having
How does the child’s understanding of her mother’s death change, and what kinds of memories or conversations help her and her father manage the days when grief feels particularly heavy?

Reading Approach
Read alongside the child rather than rushing to explain or cheerfully resolve the sadness. Pause around the hospital, the death and the jumper; invite feelings or memories, and let the child choose whether to continue talking.
