This is a high-stakes fantasy sequel combining a love triangle with battles, prophecy and threats to whole populations. Its strongest appeal is likely the mixture of romance, magic, creatures and extreme peril.

Talk about: When does courage become responsible action, and when might it become dangerous risk-taking?
How the book presents it: Romantic conflict is central and presented with intense feeling, but the extracts do not establish whether the relationships are ultimately endorsed or resolved constructively.
Talk about: How, if at all, does the prophecy affect Isla’s freedom to choose whom she loves and how she acts?
Talk about: How does the story distinguish gaining power from harming oneself, and what consequences follow?
The book may suit readers already invested in Isla’s ongoing story and its conflicted relationships. It also presents courage, perseverance and attempts to save others as important aspects of the characters’ choices.
Consider discussing the intensity of the violence and sexual material beforehand. The book also includes self-inflicted injury, graphic bloodshed, mass death, vomiting, mild profanity and occasional alcohol use.
How does the story balance Isla’s desire to save people with the violence she uses against enemies, and whether do the prophecy and love triangle make her choices feel freer or more constrained?
Check whether the reader knows the first two Lightlark books, since this is the third instalment. If the graphic material may be difficult, preview the violence and self-injury sections and agree on a pause-and-talk option.
