Malamander

The story gives two young protagonists distinct strengths: Herbie is empathetic, loyal and responsible, while Violet is brave, determined and persistent. Their partnership offers a useful counterpoint to the villain’s self-interest.

Some readers may need preparation for repeated peril: children are attacked, a monster bites off a hand, blood is mentioned, an animal is knocked unconscious, and illustrations include frightening creatures and tentacles.

As you read, ask how Herbie and Violet respond when fear, uncertainty and loss make searching difficult—and whether courage in the story means feeling unafraid or acting despite fear.

Try reading several short chapters together, then pause to map clues, question characters’ motives and discuss the difference between the town’s legend and what the protagonists discover.
