More about this book

It's tough to be Zeke. He's got his hands full with his prissy, know-it-all sister; his mean cousin Caitlyn, who's house-sitting for his missing parents; and a bully making life tough at school. And now, thanks to a stinky, scruffy, good-for-nothing talking cat, he's also got to cope with zombies, midget freedom fighters, devious spies, superstar rappers, and a whole weird world beneath our own where people wear their underwear on the outside of their clothes. Note from the Publisher: This book includes graphic-novel-style illustrations that may not be suitable for devices with small screens.

A talking cat draws Zeke from problems at home and school into an outlandish underground world.Exploratory / explanatory

How the book presents it: The premise juxtaposes recognisable difficulties with comic, fantastical characters, positioning the book as humorous fantasy.

Talk about: Does the absurd adventure help Zeke see his everyday troubles differently?

Why It May Be Worth Reading

Its contrast between recognisable problems and an absurd hidden world may appeal to readers who enjoy humour mixed with fantasy. Graphic-novel-style illustrations are part of the presentation.

What Deserves Attention

Family separation is part of the set-up: Zeke’s parents are missing, and his cousin is staying in their home. A school bully and unkind family interactions also feature.

A Conversation Worth Having

If Zeke’s troubles at home and school feel familiar, what does he seem to want from the people around him? Does the fantasy change how you think about those everyday problems?

Reading Approach

Try reading a chapter together, then let the reader choose whether to continue independently. If the illustrations are hard to see on a small screen, use a larger display or a print copy.
