Dear America

The diary perspective offers a personal route into a period that includes both the war's impact at home and the incarceration of Japanese Americans.

The story deals with a devastating attack, wartime upheaval and Japanese American incarceration, so it engages with serious historical harm and loss.

If the story raises questions about how Japanese Americans were treated during the war, what reasons does it give, and how does Piper respond?

Read together in short stretches, pausing to distinguish Piper's personal diary perspective from the wider historical events. Let the reader set the pace around the wartime material.
