Whatever Happened to Janie

Readers may connect with Janie’s difficulty accepting a new family without erasing her childhood. The book gives sustained attention to conflicting loyalties and to decisions in which no person can fully win.

Approach it as an emotionally demanding discussion of family ties rather than a simple reunion story. Be prepared for resentment, divided loyalties and the possibility that the ending will not restore everyone’s former life.

If Janie cannot simply become a different daughter, what might each household reasonably ask of her—and what responsibilities should the adults take instead?
