Naamah and the Ark at Night

This may suit shared reading when you want a calm, sound-rich book with a female biblical figure foregrounded. It also invites attention to how rhythm, song and visual perspective can make a familiar story feel new.

The flood and storm remain important background elements even though the presentation is soothing. The book also draws on a biblical story and an Arabic poetic structure, so families may wish to discuss how traditions and forms influence a retelling.

What does Naamah’s singing change for the people and animals on the ark? How do the words’ repeated sounds and the illustrations alter the feeling of the storm?

Read it aloud slowly, allowing the repeated couplets and visual pauses to work. Look closely at how animals, water, silhouettes and the night sky are arranged, then explore the author’s note if questions arise about name, tradition or poetic form.
