The Memory Tree

This may give a child a shared language for loss without placing the situation in a human family. Its focus on friendship, storytelling and remembered love can open space for personal memories and feelings.

Fox’s death is central, and the animals gather around his body before remembering him. Some children may find the death or the wintry imagery upsetting, so consider reading together and pausing if needed.

What do you think the animals miss about Fox, and what changes when they tell their stories? If someone you love died, which memories might you want to keep talking about?

Read slowly, allowing space for sadness and silence before the hopeful ending. Let the child lead discussion, and revisit the book later if they want to make or share memories.
