Themes in Context

Unity and shared effort

Runners from different countries join Kadogo and Juma’s torch-carrying journey; the group helps Juma and celebrates together.

How the book presents it: The story presents unity positively through people joining the run, helping one another and welcoming the group.

Talk about: Does the torch’s meaning feel the same to all the runners, or might they understand it differently?

Endurance and asking for help

Juma leads through the sandstorm but later becomes too tired to continue; other runners stop to help, and Kadogo takes the torch.

How the book presents it: The story values persistence, but it also shows the group stopping rather than expecting Juma to keep running.

Talk about: What might the runners have done if Juma had wanted to rest for longer?

Why It May Be Worth Reading

The story celebrates people joining together across countries, while also showing that one runner cannot carry on alone. Its upbeat tone makes cooperation a clear focus.

What Deserves Attention

A sandstorm makes running difficult, and Juma falls after becoming very tired. The group stops to help him; the illustrations show him being supported as he sits by the roadside.

A Conversation Worth Having

What do you think the torch stands for in the story, and does its meaning change when Kadogo takes it from Juma?

Reading Approach

Keep a map nearby and trace the route as the named places appear. Pause at the route changes to notice how the illustrations show the group growing and changing.
