Themes in Context

Belonging and teasing

The other chickens mock Daisy’s wish and say they will not play with her; after she flies, they admire her and want to be like her.Provisional reading

Talk about: How might the other chickens have treated Daisy kindly before she could fly?

Persistence and support

Daisy practises repeatedly and imagines flying; her mother tells her she can do it, and Daisy eventually flies.

How the book presents it: Daisy’s persistence and her mother’s encouragement are presented positively, with flight as the eventual success.

Talk about: What might support look like when someone is trying something difficult?

Why It May Be Worth Reading

The story offers a clear contrast between unkind group behaviour and supportive reassurance. Its ending turns the group’s ridicule into admiration once Daisy achieves what they thought impossible.

What Deserves Attention

The other chickens call Daisy weird, refuse to play with her and laugh when she falls. The teasing is resolved by her success and their praise; the story does not show an apology.

A Conversation Worth Having

If Daisy had not managed to fly, what do you think the other chickens might have said or done? What could they have done to be kind before she succeeded?

Reading Approach

Pause at the teasing and the fall to notice Daisy’s feelings, then compare the chickens’ reactions before and after she flies. Invite the child to describe what the pictures add.

Confidence & Basis

Theme indicators describe how the book presents a topic; they are not a verdict on the whole book or your family's values. Confidence reflects how much book-specific material was checked. The complete text and illustrations were available for this guide.

What remains unconfirmed

Belonging and teasing: Their praise follows Daisy’s success; the story does not show how they would respond if she did not succeed.
Persistence and support: The story does not explore other ways Daisy might have pursued her wish or what could happen without success.
