Book details
Leo Timmers - Author
A shared-reading choice for a child who enjoys spotting something the character has missed.
Bear cannot find his glasses and assumes he left them at Giraffe’s house. Because the glasses are actually on his head, his poor vision turns ordinary objects and scenery into imagined animals on the walk there. Giraffe returns the glasses, and the joke continues when Bear’s corrected vision no longer reveals the creatures he thought he saw. The picture-book premise centres on perception, mistaken identity, imagination, friendship and visual humour.

Sign in for personalised guidanceHow the book presents it: Helpfulness provides a practical form of friendship; the joke turns on what Bear can see, not a moral failing.
Talk about: How can we help someone who has made an obvious mistake without embarrassing them?
The glasses are on Bear's head while he imagines animals in the landscape. The reader can compare his interpretation with the pictures; the useful challenge is noticing and explaining, not just decoding words.
The central joke concerns mistaken perception and lost glasses.
What makes Bear think that is an animal, and what do you notice instead?
Look at the pictures together and invite the child to spot what Bear has mistaken for an animal.
