Book Analysis

Sign in for personalised guidanceHow the book presents it: Their shared work and Amir’s sustained search are presented warmly, and the garden later blossoms.
Talk about: What does Amir learn from working alongside Grandpa?
The pictures make the garden’s change from thriving to struggling, then flourishing, easy to follow. The story also gives a concrete example of one creature helping control another.
The garden’s decline is visible, including bare branches and damaged plants, but the story keeps the problem focused on the garden rather than danger to people.
What clues help Amir and Grandpa work out what is wrong with the garden, and why might ladybirds help?
Pause over the garden illustrations as they change, and invite your child to spot what is different. Afterwards, talk together about helpful and harmful roles in a garden.
