Outside in

The story invites reflection on what makes a family and a friend, while placing questions about consumption beside the Underlanders’ use of discarded goods. Their way of life is presented as unusual, without a clearly stated verdict.

Lynn’s life is saved by Blossom, and the Underlanders live secretly in a bunker beneath a reservoir. These elements bring peril and concealed, unconventional living into the story.

Pause at Lynn’s changing view of family and lifestyle. Invite the reader to compare what each family values, without assuming either way of life is presented as the right answer.
