Out of the Woods

The book offers opportunities to notice how Snow White, Red Riding Hood, Orpheus and Eurydice, Pandora and other motifs are woven into one adventure. A reader familiar with those stories may enjoy spotting contrasts, echoes and deliberate complications.

Consider discussing whether the repeated reports that a loved one has died feel suspenseful, confusing or emotionally tiring. The witch’s pursuit, threats to obtain a heart, dangerous animals and the Underworld may also merit a check-in.

How does the story make danger feel playful as well as frightening, and does its ending resolve the sisters’ journey in a satisfying way? Which borrowed tales or myths seem changed most noticeably?

Read in manageable sections and pause after major revelations about danger or loss. Keep a note of the tales and myths recognised, then compare expectations with the ending, which is described as neither wholly happy nor wholly unhappy.
