Reader choices and endings

The reader decides which leads to follow, and decisions shape the story’s ending; the book offers over 20 endings.Exploratory / explanatory

How the book presents it: The branching structure makes the reader an active participant in how the adventure unfolds.

Talk about: How did your choices affect the route you followed, and would you make a different choice next time?

Tourism and island artefacts

One described route criticises tourism and treats taking artefacts for a European museum as villainous, while returning them to island inhabitants is presented positively.

How the book presents it: This route appears to question outsiders’ handling of island artefacts and tourism, rather than treating these choices as neutral.

Talk about: If the story presents different choices about artefacts, who gets to decide where they belong, and why?

Why It May Be Worth Reading

The branching design invites readers to weigh alternatives and see how different decisions shape the adventure. It may suit a reader who enjoys revisiting a story to explore other routes and endings.

What Deserves Attention

Supernatural peril includes a shark threat, mysteriously disappearing people, a volcano with destructive power, resurrected warriors and active skeletons. Some endings may be especially frightening.

A Conversation Worth Having

If a choice leads to danger or a frightening ending, what clues might help you decide whether to continue along that route or try another?

Reading Approach

Consider reading together at choice points, letting the child choose a route and pause or change direction if the suspense feels too much. Afterwards, compare how a different choice might change the adventure.
