Two friends investigate the poisoning of Hamilton’s father, with several people around the family treated as possible suspects.Exploratory / explanatory

How the book presents it: The story uses a murder mystery to recast Hamlet in a modern small-town setting.

Talk about: How does the mystery format shape what the story asks readers to notice about justice?

Pollution in the town

The paper plant and polluted river are associated with the smell that greets Horatio in Denmark.Provisional reading

Talk about: Does the story connect the town’s pollution to its wider conflicts?

Why It May Be Worth Reading

The Hamlet retelling gives the mystery a literary connection, while the town’s paper plant and polluted river bring environmental damage into the setting.

What Deserves Attention

Poisoning and a murder investigation are central to the plot; pollution and a persistent bad smell also shape the town’s atmosphere.

A Conversation Worth Having

If the friends’ investigation raises questions about justice, what would count as convincing proof before accusing someone?

Reading Approach

Try reading it alongside the broad premise of Hamlet, then compare how the modern setting turns the family tragedy into a small-town investigation.
